Can you build muscle with just bodyweight training?

Yes, and more than most people expect, especially as a beginner or intermediate. Muscle growth comes from taking sets close to failure and making them progressively harder over time. It does not depend on whether the resistance is a barbell or your own body. Head to head, a few weeks of progressive push up training produced similar strength and chest thickness gains to bench press training. The real catch is progression. A push up you can do for 30 easy reps has stopped building much, so you need a way to keep raising the difficulty: harder variations, slower tempo, single limb versions, or added load. And some muscle groups are hard to keep overloading with bodyweight alone. Legs, back and hamstrings run out of road faster than your chest, shoulders and arms. For most people training at home, bodyweight plus a pull up bar and a bit of added load will build a lot of muscle. Chasing maximum size and strength eventually means picking up a barbell.

Does the type of resistance matter for muscle?

Not much, for growth. When sets are taken close to failure, muscle grows about as well with light loads as with heavy ones. A network pooled analysis of 28 studies found hypertrophy was essentially load independent, while heavier loads mainly won on strength. Your bodyweight, in a well chosen exercise, is a light to moderate load. Take those sets close to failure and there is nothing a barbell does for muscle size that a hard push up variation does not.

What happens when you compare them directly?

They come out level. In a randomised trial, four weeks of progressive push up training produced similar increases in bench press one rep max and chest thickness to four weeks of bench press training. In another, when the load and the muscle activity were matched, elastic band push ups and bench press produced similar strength gains over five weeks, while a control group did not change. Same effort, same stimulus, same result. The equipment was not the point.

These are short studies, four to five weeks, small, in men, and testing only an upper body pushing movement. So the fair claim is that bodyweight can build muscle and matches weights head to head for a pressing exercise. Not that bodyweight equals weights for the whole body, forever.

Where bodyweight training runs into limits

Two places. The first is progression. Every method needs the exercise to keep getting harder, or you plateau. With a barbell you add 2.5 kg. With bodyweight you have to be more inventive: more reps taken genuinely close to failure, then harder variations (feet elevated, decline, archer, one arm progressions), then slower tempo and pauses, then single limb versions, then added load with a weighted vest or a loaded backpack. The push up trial worked precisely because it progressed the variation at every stage. Skip that and bodyweight training stalls like anything else.

The second is certain muscle groups. Upper body pushing is easy to progress with bodyweight. Pulling is well covered too, if you have a bar or rings. But the legs and the back, hamstrings and glutes run out of road faster. Bodyweight squats and lunges become easy for most trained people, so you move to single leg work and then need added load, and progressive hip hinge and hamstring training is genuinely hard without a bar. Heavier loads also keep their edge for maximal strength.

Training bodyweight only? Pick four to eight movements that cover push, pull, squat or hinge, and core. You will want a pull up bar or a set of rings for the pulling. Take most sets to within a couple of reps of failure. Every week or two, progress by making a movement harder, not just doing more reps forever: change the leverage, slow it down, go single limb, or add a vest or pack. When a movement is too easy even in its hardest sensible version, add external load. A beginner or intermediate can build plenty of muscle this way for a year or more. If you are already advanced and chasing maximum size and strength, especially in the legs and back, that is the point to get a barbell.
