No, not directly. You gain body fat by eating more calories than you burn over time, and that is true whether the extra calories come from fat, carbs or protein. Head to head, low fat and higher fat diets produce similar weight loss over a year, and under tightly controlled feeding, eating more fat at the same calories does not cause more fat gain. Fat does matter in one way: it is calorie dense, about 9 calories per gram, versus roughly 4 for carbs and protein, so fatty foods pack more energy into less food and can make it easier to overeat without noticing. That is a portion problem, not fat being "converted" straight to your waistline. Don't fear fat; keep an eye on total calories.

Does dietary fat "turn into" body fat?
