Ingredients
Quantities adjust; cooking times do not. Choose a suitable pan and check doneness. Small spice amounts are approximate; weigh fractional whole ingredients where needed. Changing servings clears the ingredient checklist.
This recipe adjusts up to 4 servings. For more, cook separate batches rather than crowding the pan.

You will need
- Espresso machine, suitable plain coffee and fresh drinking water; follow that machine's instructions for setup, heating, brewing and safe operation
- Kitchen scales and an ice-cream scoop or sturdy spoon
- A small heatproof measuring jug with a handle and pouring spout, marked in millilitres and suitable for hot coffee
- One serving cup or small bowl per selected portion, at least 250 ml capacity, rated by its manufacturer for hot-and-cold food use; use at room temperature, not chilled
- One dessert spoon per serving and a stable, heat-resistant surface
Let's make it
The method
0 of 4 steps marked
Keep your place for this page visit. Ticks do not confirm doneness or food safety; follow every cooking and storage instruction.
Step 1. Set up before scooping
Wash your hands and use clean equipment. Check the ice-cream label for vegetarian suitability, allergens, dates and storage. Leave it in the freezer while preparing the coffee. Put the room-temperature, manufacturer-approved serving cups on a stable heat-resistant surface with room around them; do not hold a cup in your hand while pouring hot coffee into it.
Step 2. Brew and measure the espresso
Follow your espresso machine's instructions using suitable coffee and fresh drinking water. Keep hands away from hot outlets and steam, and wait until brewing has stopped before moving the receiving vessel. Carefully measure the selected total amount of brewed espresso in the heatproof jug, holding its handle. Do not use an ordinary cold glass measuring container.
Step 3. Portion the ice cream
Divide the selected weight of ice cream equally between the serving cups. For the base two servings, that is 90 g per cup. Leave plenty of space for the coffee rather than filling to the rim. If there is insufficient headroom, transfer the ice cream to a larger suitable cup or bowl rated for the same hot-and-cold food use before pouring. Return only the still-frozen unused tub promptly to the freezer; do not put scooped or melting ice cream back into it.
Step 4. Pour and serve
From close to the cup, pour the espresso slowly over the ice cream, dividing it equally between servings: 30 ml per cup for the base recipe. Avoid splashing and keep fingers away from the hot stream. The edges will begin to melt into the coffee; no further cooking is needed. Serve promptly with a spoon, but wait until each mouthful is a comfortable temperature before eating. Cold ice cream does not guarantee that all the surrounding coffee is cool enough.

Swaps & variations
- Decaffeinated espresso can replace the regular espresso by the same brewed volume. Decaffeinated is not caffeine-free; this recipe does not estimate its caffeine content or make a sleep or health claim.
- A labelled dairy-free vanilla frozen dessert can replace the ice cream by weight. Check the full ingredients and cross-contact warnings: alternatives may contain soya, nuts or other allergens, and they can melt differently. A dairy-free swap is not automatically allergy-safe or vegetarian/vegan without checking the product.
- Chocolate ice cream can replace the vanilla by weight for a different flavour. Recheck its vegetarian suitability and allergens; this variation is untested and may not match the serving photograph.
Recipe notes & sources

- Nespresso: Pixie safety precautions and coffee preparation
Manufacturer example for scalding hazards at the coffee outlet, safe appliance operation and following model-specific brewing instructions. Not an endorsement, universal machine method or validation of NST's ingredient amounts or timing.
Checked 2026-10-14 - Anchor Hocking: glass care and use
Manufacturer warnings about sudden temperature changes, damaged glass and different vessels' use limits support checking the exact serving vessel. This source does not certify an arbitrary glass, the photographed glass or an affogato vessel.
Checked 2026-10-14 - FSA: chilling, freezing and defrosting food
Primary guidance for a freezer around −18°C and following label instructions. Its general cooked-leftover advice is not used as permission to store or refreeze melted affogato.
Checked 2026-10-14 - Food Standards Scotland: keeping frozen food cold
Primary safe-method guidance, PDF pages 6–7, specifically says not to refreeze ice cream that has begun thawing. Used only for frozen-food handling, not as a claim this coffee dessert is for children.
Checked 2026-10-14 - FDA: decaffeinated does not mean caffeine-free
Primary support for the narrow decaf wording only. No caffeine amount, personal intake advice, health benefit or safety threshold is inferred for this dessert.
Checked 2026-10-14 - Luis Felipe Pérez / Pexels: Coffee with Ice Creams
Primary photo page identifies espresso poured over vanilla ice cream and names the creator. Supports a category-level serving illustration only: exact recipe, amounts, brands, caffeine, temperature and glass suitability are not verified. Not an NST kitchen test or owner photograph acceptance.
