Are eggs bad for your cholesterol?

For most healthy people, no. In large long term studies, eating up to about one egg a day is not linked to a higher risk of heart disease or stroke, and major health bodies have dropped the specific dietary cholesterol limit in favour of "eat a healthy overall pattern". Eggs do contain cholesterol, and eating more cholesterol than usual nudges blood LDL up a little in most people, more in a minority of strong responders, but the knock on effect on actual heart disease risk in the population is small to absent, partly because eggs also raise HDL. The bigger issue is the company the egg keeps. A fry up with bacon, sausage, butter and white toast is not "an egg". If you have type 2 diabetes, an inherited high cholesterol condition, existing heart disease, or a doctor has flagged your LDL, stay at the moderate end and get individual advice.

Do eggs raise your cholesterol?

A little, for most people. Eggs are high in dietary cholesterol, and the American Heart Association's review of the intervention studies concludes that eating more cholesterol than the current average is associated with higher total or LDL cholesterol. The size of that response varies: a minority of people are "hyper responders" whose LDL moves more. But eggs also raise HDL cholesterol and tend to shift LDL towards larger particles, so the net effect on blood lipid driven heart risk is smaller than the cholesterol content alone suggests.

Do eggs raise your risk of heart disease?

On the population evidence, not at moderate intakes. Three large US cohorts, combined with an updated pooled analysis covering 33 risk estimates, about 1.7 million people and 139,000 cardiovascular events, found that an increase of one egg per day was not associated with cardiovascular disease risk (pooled relative risk 0.98, 95% confidence interval 0.93 to 1.03). Results were similar for coronary heart disease and stroke, and in Asian populations egg intake was actually associated with lower risk. This is why the AHA's 2019 advisory stopped recommending a specific milligram limit on dietary cholesterol and instead advises building meals around healthy patterns, Mediterranean style, DASH style, which naturally end up relatively low in cholesterol anyway.

What about eggs and diabetes?

Here the picture splits by country, which tells you something. An updated pooled analysis of 16 cohorts found no overall association between moderate egg consumption and type 2 diabetes, but US studies linked each extra egg a day to a modestly higher risk (relative risk about 1.18), while European and Asian studies found no link. The most likely explanation is not the egg but what it is eaten with: in the US, eggs are more often paired with processed meat, refined carbohydrates and fried sides. A poached egg on wholegrain toast is a different meal from a fry up.
