Do you need to eat breakfast?

Randomised trials show that adding breakfast does not help weight loss; if anything, people assigned to eat breakfast had a slightly higher total daily calorie intake and slightly higher weight than those who skipped it. Skipping breakfast does not trigger weight gaining overeating later, and it does not slow your metabolism. The often quoted link between skipping breakfast and being heavier comes from observational data, is weak in careful long term analyses, and is tangled up with other differences between people who skip and people who do not. Breakfast does show some effects, since in one tight trial it was linked to more spontaneous morning activity and steadier blood sugar through the afternoon, but not weight loss. Is breakfast "the most important meal"?

Not for weight, on the trial evidence. A pooled analysis of 13 randomised trials in high income countries compared eating breakfast with skipping it. It found that eating breakfast was linked to a small higher body weight and a higher total daily calorie intake, about 260 more calories a day, than skipping. The reviewers concluded that adding breakfast "might not be a good strategy for weight loss" and could have the opposite effect. Those trials were short and mostly low quality, so this is not a strong "skip breakfast to lose weight" result either. The honest read is simply that breakfast is not a weight loss tool.

Does skipping it make you fat or slow your metabolism?

No on both counts. In the trials above, people who skipped breakfast did not compensate by overeating later in a way that made them heavier.
