No, there is no fixed cap, and protein above 25 to 30 grams is not "wasted". Two things get muddled in the myth. First, absorption: your gut takes up almost all the protein you eat, just more slowly for a big dose. Second, use for muscle building: older studies suggested the muscle building response maxed out around 20 to 25 grams, but newer work shows 40 grams beat 20 grams after a whole body session, and 100 grams produced a bigger and much longer response, more than 12 hours, than 25 grams, with almost no extra amino acids burned off. The response per gram does get less efficient with larger doses, and a big dose is used more slowly, but it does not stop at a magic number. What actually decides how much muscle you build is your total daily protein, roughly 1.6 grams per kilogram of bodyweight a day, not how you slice it up. Where does the "30g per meal" number come from?

From early muscle protein synthesis studies, mostly using fast digesting whey on its own, which found the response was close to maximal at around 20 to 25 grams per serving. That got flattened in gym lore into "your body can only absorb 30g at a time, the rest is wasted", which is not what those studies measured. They measured how fast muscle was being built in the hours after a drink, not how much protein the gut let in, and not muscle gain over months.
