A 2026 systematic review and meta analysis of twelve randomised trials did not find a clear benefit for muscle soreness or maximum strength recovery. It reported possible improvements in countermovement jump recovery, but certainty was low. This means a massage gun may feel helpful to some people without being a proven solution for every recovery goal.

How to think about the decision

Consider what you want the tool to do, whether a simpler option already meets that need, how comfortable it feels, and whether the cost makes sense for you. A massage gun should not replace sleep, appropriate training load, nutrition, time, or qualified care when pain or injury is a concern.

The included trials studied healthy adolescents or adults, including physically active people and athletes, after exercise intended to cause short-term muscle damage. People with current musculoskeletal injury were excluded, so the findings should not be applied to injury treatment.
