But building new muscle protein needs all the essential amino acids. Supply only BCAAs and the other six have to come from breaking down existing muscle, so the response is capped; a review of the evidence concluded that the claim BCAA supplements produce an anabolic response in people is "unwarranted". BCAAs alone do nudge muscle protein synthesis up a bit, one trial found about a 22% rise, but that is well short of what an equivalent dose of whole protein or all the essential amino acids produces. And if you already eat enough total protein, isolated BCAAs on top add nothing, because your food and protein powder already contain BCAAs plus everything else. What are BCAAs, and why are they sold for muscle?

BCAAs are three essential amino acids, leucine, isoleucine and valine, with a branched molecular shape. Of the three, leucine is the strongest switch for the signalling pathway that starts muscle protein synthesis. That one fact, "leucine turns on muscle building", is the basis of the entire BCAA supplement category.

Do BCAAs alone build muscle?

Not to any meaningful degree. Turning on the signal is not the same as building protein, and building new muscle protein needs all the essential amino acids, not just three. If you supply only BCAAs, the other six essential amino acids have to be liberated from existing muscle, so the amount of new protein you can build is capped, and net muscle protein balance can stay negative. A review of the human evidence put it bluntly: the claim that dietary BCAAs alone produce an anabolic response is "unwarranted". What if I already eat enough protein?

Do they help soreness or fasted training?

So are BCAAs worth it?
