Heavy drinking soon after a hard session is the clear problem. In a controlled trial, a large dose of alcohol, around a dozen standard drinks, taken after training cut the rate of muscle protein synthesis by roughly a quarter even when it was consumed alongside protein, and by more than a third with carbohydrate. Over a full training block the picture is more mixed: strength, power and muscular endurance often look unchanged in studies of drinking after exercise, but hormone and synthesis markers move the wrong way, cortisol up, testosterone and muscle building signals down. So the honest summary: a big night right after training measurably dents the muscle response; an occasional modest drink, well away from your session and inside a diet you are tracking, has a smaller and less certain effect. Alcohol also works against you indirectly. It disrupts sleep, adds easily missed calories, and tends to make the next day's training worse. None of this is a recommendation to drink or not to; alcohol's wider health effects are a matter for a doctor.
What does alcohol do to muscle after training?
It blunts the muscle building response, and this has been measured directly. In a randomised crossover study, trained men did a hard session of resistance work plus cycling and then had one of three things: protein alone, a large dose of alcohol (about 1.5 g per kg of body weight, roughly 12 standard drinks) with protein, or that same alcohol dose with carbohydrate. Muscle biopsies showed that, compared with protein alone, myofibrillar protein synthesis was about 24% lower with alcohol plus protein and about 37% lower with alcohol plus carbohydrate. Protein blunted the hit but did not erase it. That is a very high alcohol dose. It establishes that alcohol interferes with the anabolic response after exercise; it does not tell you that one or two drinks do the same.
Does it actually slow your progress over time?
The functional evidence is more mixed. A systematic review of 12 studies of alcohol after resistance exercise found that force, power, muscular endurance, soreness and perceived exertion were largely unchanged by drinking after exercise. But the same review found alcohol was associated with higher cortisol and lower testosterone, plasma amino acids and muscle protein synthesis. Putting the two together: the clear negative is heavy drinking close to training. An occasional modest drink, kept away from your session and accounted for in your diet, has a smaller effect on muscle, and the evidence that it meaningfully slows progress is weak.
The indirect hits
Alcohol also affects training through the back door. Sleep: it disrupts sleep quality even when it helps you fall asleep, and poor sleep blunts recovery and next day performance. Calories: alcohol carries about 7 calories per gram, and drinks are easy to undercount, so a few pints or glasses of wine can quietly wipe out a day's calorie deficit. Next day training: sessions the day after drinking tend to be lower quality, so volume and effort drop. Injury risk: training or other activity while drunk raises the chance of getting hurt.

If you drink, the evidence points to a few sensible habits: keep alcohol away from the hours right after a hard session, keep the amount modest, get your protein and fluids in first, and count the calories towards your day.
